Why is it important to have school health services? ›

Research shows that SBHCs have a positive impact on absences, dropout rates, disciplinary problems and other academic outcomes. Students receiving SBHC mental health services improve their grades more quickly than their peers.

Coordinated school health addresses eight different aspects of health: health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, psychological and counseling services, healthy school environment, health promotion for staff, and parent and community involvement.

School clinics play a crucial role in promoting the overall health and well-being of students by providing essential health services and addressing barriers to healthcare access. These clinics improve school attendance rates by addressing common health issues like illness and fever, thus reducing absenteeism.

Requirements for LPN and RN applicants include:

Two years of pediatric, community/public health or emergency room nursing experience. Current certifications: Maryland Nursing License, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

School health services staff can help all students with preventive care such as flu shots and vision and hearing screening, as well as acute and emergency care.

To promote physical health and well-being for children and adolescents, schools can provide safe and supportive environments, healthy foods, health education, and physical education. They can also offer access to health care and mental health services and help students manage chronic conditions.

School health services policies: Define the structure of a health services program and guide staff in providing optimal care while avoiding problems. Offer direction and guidance for health services provided within the school district. Set expectations for students, parents, staff and administrators.

The component "reproductive health services" is not a part of the Coordinated School Health Program.

Staffed by health care workers like nurses and doctors, school-based health centers provide a range of services to meet kids' and teens' health care needs. These can include checkups, lab tests, prescriptions, counseling, and regular visits for problems like asthma and diabetes.

However, schools of public health have a critical role in assisting health agencies in the development of training materials, providing expertise in the delivery, presentation, and evaluation of the materials, and in the assessment of student learning.

They provide access to caring adults and services such as primary care, counseling, mentoring, and peer-to-peer support. School Wellness Centers support teachers by assisting children and adolescents to thrive in the classroom and beyond!

School nurses provide acute and emergency care, treat and assess behavioral health concerns, connect student families with community resources, and create care plans for students with chronic conditions.
